Understanding Moon phases
The four primary phases at a glance
A complete phase cycle lasts about 29.5 days on average. The changing shape is caused by the relative positions of the Sun, Earth and Moon, not by Earth’s shadow, which is relevant only during a lunar eclipse.

New moon
The Moon is approximately between Earth and the Sun, so its illuminated side is barely visible from Earth.

First quarter
About a week after new moon, half of the visible lunar disc is illuminated and continues to wax.

Full moon
Earth is approximately between the Sun and the Moon, and the Earth-facing side appears fully illuminated.

Last quarter
About a week after full moon, half of the visible disc is illuminated again and continues to wane.
